Home Hunting Tools

Finding the home you love involves using the right home hunting tools. The people that I know who have found and bought the best properties in the shortest period of time have completely immersed themselves in the experience. If you really want to find your perfect home, you should really make the search your part time job.

You can search most of the market without having to leave your couch. The web is a convenient and efficient way to keep up to date on the market. It offers home hunters access to websites containing listings of homes for sale, historical sales data, as well as powerful search tools that enable buyers to easily sift through the market. You have access to property images, floor plans and even online video content.

Another way to search for property is through the listings in metropolitan and local newspapers, and real estate magazines. Also, when you're driving around always keep your eyes peeled for fresh signboards, and take a note of the agent’s details if the property leaves an impression. Open-home inspections are crucial to the process of researching properties that you like the look of in more detail. Not only will you be able to physically view the property, but you can quite often use the opportunity to speak to the agent.

The ball is definitely in the home hunter’s court – it’s never been easier or more convenient to find a home to buy.

The internet has changed the way that property is searched for over a few short years & I suspect will grow even more rapidly over the next decade as broadband penetration grows & new functionality adds even further to the Customer experience.

For the time being both local & metropolitan papers will continue to play a role but I suspect the days of real estate print classifieds are well & truly numbered.

Also I must disclose that I am a director & shareholder of realestate.com.au for full transparency.

Do you think that, in time, the internet will dominate to a point where the need for advertising property in newspapers will disappear completely?

Hi John

With so many tools available to search and research property, do you think that the need for a skilled agent has diminished?
